Sharing PDFs

Share a PDF as a link instead of an attachment

An attachment is a copy you cannot take back, and on some phones it is a download rather than a document. A link opens the PDF in a viewer, can be limited to the people you choose, and can stop opening on the day you pick.

The viewer

A viewer that opens on every device, phones included

Drop a PDF on the box at /new and its link opens in Solta's viewer, on every plan. The viewer draws the pages itself with PDF.js, so the PDF opens in browsers that have no viewer of their own, such as Chrome on Android, and inside a frame.

Pages are drawn as they come into view, so a long report stays light on a phone. Text can be selected and found with the browser's search, and there are zoom, fit and Download buttons.

Folders

A folder of PDFs at one link

Drop a folder, or a zip, and every file is served at the path you gave it. With no index.html at the top, the link opens on a list of what is inside, each name a link to its file, so a set of documents becomes one link. A folder can be up to 50 MB unpacked and 500 files, on every plan.

Who can open it

A password, or only the people you invite

Unlisted, on every plan, opens for anyone with the link and asks search engines not to index it. Password, on every plan (one site at a time until you pay), and Invited, on Pro and Team, put a real check in front of the files: nothing is served until it passes, the PDF included.

Invited lets in only the addresses you add. Each person verifies by email once, with no account and no password.

Expiry

A link that stops opening on a date

On every plan, choose a date and the link stops opening after it. Somebody who still needs it can ask you for it again from the page it shows, and you get an email with their address and note. Moving the date opens the same link again.

Analytics

How often each document was opened

A site's analytics count views and visitors by day, with countries, devices, pages and referring domains. In a folder, each PDF opened in the viewer is counted under its own address, so you can see which documents were read.

Visitors are counted, not identified: there is no cookie, and you cannot see who opened it. How far back you can look: the last 30 days on Free, the last year on Pro, and all of it on Team.

Worked example

A board pack for six people

This uses Invited and expiry, so it needs Pro and Team.

  1. Put the meeting's five PDFs in one folder and drop it on the box at /new.
  2. The link opens on a list of the five files, and each one opens in the viewer.
  3. In Who can open this, choose Invited and add the six board members' addresses.
  4. Set the link to stop opening the day after the meeting.
  5. The day before, the site's analytics show which of the five PDFs have been opened, and how often.
Questions

Questions people ask

Can I replace the PDF and keep the same link?

Not yet. A PDF or a folder you drop always makes a new site, with a link of its own. To change the document, publish the new one and send its link.

Can people download it?

Yes. The viewer has a Download button, and anyone who can open the link can save the file. A password or an invitation decides who can open it, not what they do with it afterwards.

Can I put the PDF on my website?

A public or unlisted one, yes, as an embed, on every plan: the viewer works inside a frame. A PDF behind a password or an invitation cannot be embedded.

Try it with your own file

No account needed. Paste it or drop it, and the link is yours to keep once you claim it.

Or publish it from the chat

Add Solta to Claude or ChatGPT once, then ask in any conversation to publish what it built. The link comes back in the chat.
