How to open a Keynote file on Windows or Android

By

A .key file is a presentation made in Apple's Keynote. Windows and Android have no Keynote app, and PowerPoint doesn't open .key files. You can open it in a browser with Keynote for iCloud, convert it to PowerPoint, or turn it into a link that opens on any phone.

Open a Keynote file on Windows with Keynote for iCloud

Apple's Keynote for iCloud runs in a browser on Windows. Apple names Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. You need an Apple Account, which is free to make, and no Apple device.

  1. Go to icloud.com and sign in with your Apple Account, or make one.
  2. Open Keynote.
  3. Drag the .key file into the window, or press the Upload button and choose it.
  4. Double-click the presentation to open it. You can play it, and edit it.

A free account comes with 1 GB of iCloud storage, which is where the file is kept.

Convert Keynote to PowerPoint

Apple's own advice is to convert a Keynote file before you open it in PowerPoint. Keynote saves a copy as .pptx, and the original stays as it is:

  • On a Mac: in Keynote, choose File → Export To → PowerPoint.
  • On an iPhone or an iPad: tap the Share button, then Export and Send, then PowerPoint, and save it to Files.
  • On Windows, in Keynote for iCloud: open the presentation, press the More button, choose Download a Copy, then PowerPoint. The .pptx goes to your Downloads folder.

If somebody sent you the .key file, the quickest way is often to ask them to export it and send the .pptx instead.

Open a Keynote file on Android

Apple says Keynote on iCloud.com needs a computer, and on a tablet you can only view files. Apple says nothing about phones. On an Android phone, these are the ways that work:

  • Ask the sender for a PowerPoint or PDF copy, which any phone opens.
  • Upload the .key file to Google Drive. Drive can show a preview of a Keynote file, but Google Slides can't convert or edit it.
  • Turn it into a link with Solta, below, and open the link in your phone's browser.

Drop the .key file on the PPTX viewer, and you get a link that opens as slides in any browser: on Windows, on Android, on an iPhone. Nobody needs an account or an app to open it.

Solta doesn't convert a Keynote file. It shows the small picture Keynote saves of each slide inside the file. In our test with Keynote 14.1, each picture was 356 pixels wide for a widescreen deck: enough to follow the presentation and read large titles, but not small print. The page tells the people who open it, and Download gives them the original file.

For the full presentation, convert it to PowerPoint first, as above, and drop the .pptx. Then every slide opens full size, with its text sharp.

Which one to use

  • You need to edit it, on Windows: Keynote for iCloud.
  • You will open it in PowerPoint or Google Slides: convert it to PowerPoint first.
  • You only need to see it, on an Android phone: ask for a PowerPoint or PDF copy, or use Drive's preview.
  • You need to send it to people who don't have a Mac: convert it to PowerPoint, and send it as a link.
