How to open a PPTX file without PowerPoint
By João Saraiva
You can open a PPTX file without PowerPoint, for free. PowerPoint for the web and Google Slides open it in the browser, Keynote opens it on a Mac, and LibreOffice Impress opens it on Windows, Mac or Linux. To only look at the slides, or send them to somebody, Solta opens them in any browser with no account.
PowerPoint for the web, free with a Microsoft account
- Sign in at OneDrive with a Microsoft account. An Outlook.com or Hotmail address is one, and making one is free.
- Upload the .pptx to OneDrive.
- Open it. It opens in PowerPoint for the web, where you can view it and edit it.
This is Microsoft's own answer. Its old PowerPoint Viewer, the free program for Windows, was retired on April 30, 2018, and can't be downloaded anymore.
Google Slides
Upload the .pptx to Google Drive and open it: it opens in Google Slides. You don't have to convert it. You can edit it there, and Google saves the changes in the PowerPoint file. Google says some features aren't shown or can't be edited this way, and a file with a password opens only to view. You need a Google account.
Keynote, on a Mac
Keynote opens .pptx and .ppt files. Drag the file onto the Keynote icon, or choose File, then Open, in Keynote. Double-clicking the file opens PowerPoint instead, if you have it. You can save the result as a Keynote or a PowerPoint file.
LibreOffice Impress, on Windows, Mac or Linux
LibreOffice is free, open source, and has nothing to sign in to. Install it, then choose File, then Open, and pick the .pptx: it opens in Impress, LibreOffice's presentation program. It opens .ppt files too, and saves back to PowerPoint's format with File, then Save As.
On a phone
Microsoft says its free PowerPoint apps for phones and tablets open presentations: get PowerPoint from the App Store or Google Play. If you would rather install nothing, Solta's link below opens in the phone's browser.
In any browser, with no account: Solta
- Drop the .pptx on the PPTX viewer, or press Choose files and pick it.
- Open the link that comes back. The slides show in the browser, one at a time, on a phone or a computer.
- To show the presentation to somebody else, send them the same link. They need no account and no app either.
You don't need an account. Without one, the link lasts 24 hours: sign in to keep it. A file can be up to 10 MB on Free.
Solta is for looking at slides and sending them, not for editing. Animations and videos don't play, speaker notes aren't shown, and a font Solta doesn't have is replaced by a similar one. Download gives back the original file. What shows differently from PowerPoint.
Which one to use
- You need to edit it and have a Microsoft account: PowerPoint for the web.
- You need to edit it and use Google: Google Slides.
- You want a program on your computer with no account: LibreOffice Impress, or Keynote on a Mac.
- You only need to see the slides, or send them to somebody: Solta.
