Saving data

A tracker, a checklist or a quiz saves what people do in their browser, like any web page. In its Site settings → Saved data you can keep it on Solta instead, so it follows people to their other devices, or share one store between everyone who opens the site.

On each visitor's device

The default, and what happens on any web page. What the site keeps in localStorage stays in that browser. Nothing is kept on Solta, and another phone starts empty.

Each visitor's, saved on Solta

The site needs no change. Visitors get a small Save across devices button in the bottom-left corner. They type their email, we send a six-digit code, and from then on everything the site keeps in localStorage is saved on Solta as well. On another device, they sign in the same way and their data is back before the page starts.

To use your own button instead, add <meta name="solta-data-chip" content="off"> to the page and call solta.data.open() from it. solta.data.email() says who is signed in, and solta.data.signOut() signs them out on that device; what is on the device stays there.

It is on every plan. A site keeps up to 1 MB in all on Free, 50 MB on Pro and 200 MB on Team. Something deleted on one device is deleted on the others the next time they open the site, unless that device changed it while signed out after it was deleted: then its newer copy is kept and saved. Deletions are remembered for 30 days, so a device away for longer keeps what it had.

Shared by everyone

On Pro and Team, one store for the whole site: a vote count, a guestbook, a team's checklist. The site's code uses it directly:

const votes = (await solta.data.shared.get("votes")) ?? 0;
await solta.data.shared.set("votes", votes + 1);
await solta.data.shared.push("guestbook", { name, note });
const everything = await solta.data.shared.all();

Values can be anything JSON can hold. push adds to a list without losing anybody else's addition made at the same moment, which reading, changing and setting would. Anyone who can open the site can change what is shared, so it suits a site behind a password or invitation.

Yours to manage

Site settings → Saved data shows how much the site keeps, and each visitor who saves there, by address. When somebody asks you to delete their data, delete it there: it is gone, and they are signed out. Export takes everything as JSON. It is all deleted with the site.

Each key is up to 200 characters and each value up to 256 KB, with up to 2,000 keys for each visitor and for the shared store. One visitor can use up to a tenth of a site's allowance (at least 100 KB), so nobody can fill it for everybody else; on a shared store that is counted per network address. What a site saves also counts towards your storage, like what you publish.
