Claude artifacts: what they are, examples, and how to share one

By

A Claude artifact is anything Claude makes for you that you would put in front of someone, such as a document, a deck, a dashboard, a single-page website or a small interactive tool, and it opens in its own window beside the chat. Artifacts are on every Claude plan, Free included, and you can change one by asking Claude, find it again in the Artifacts tab, and share it with other people.

What Claude artifacts are

Anthropic's help article says Claude makes an artifact when what it is writing is:

  • significant and self-contained, typically over 15 lines;
  • something you are likely to edit, iterate on, or reuse outside the conversation;
  • able to stand on its own, without the rest of the chat;
  • something you are likely to come back to.

You can also ask for one, in any chat or in Claude Code, or start from a template in the Artifacts tab, where everything you make is kept. On the web and in Claude Desktop you make, edit and share them; in Claude for iOS and Android you can ask for one, view it and edit it, but sharing settings are changed on the web or the desktop app.

Artifacts made in a chat before 16 September 2026 are what Anthropic calls legacy artifacts. They keep working and can still be published and shared, but new ones aren't made that way. The difference matters most for sharing, below.

The kinds of artifacts

Claude can make one out of almost anything, the help article says: documents, code snippets, single-page websites, images, diagrams and flowcharts, dashboards, and small interactive tools. Five templates give the common ones a starting point and an editor of their own:

  • Docs: documents you write with Claude and your team, exported to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
  • Slides: decks you edit slide by slide and present in Claude, exported to PowerPoint or PDF.
  • Design: mockups, prototypes, one-pagers and landing pages, exported as a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML.
  • Dashboards (beta): charts from your data platforms or connected apps, each showing its query.
  • Motion (beta): animated explainers and walkthroughs, exported as MP4, on Team and Enterprise.

Some artifacts call Claude themselves, which makes them small apps: a coach, a quiz, a game. The people using one sign in with their own Claude account, and what they ask counts against their own plan, not yours. In Claude Code, an artifact is one HTML or Markdown page, published to a private address on claude.ai, that updates as the session goes on.

Can you use Claude artifacts for free?

Yes. Artifacts are on Free as on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and so are the Docs, Slides and Design templates. What Free doesn't have, by Anthropic's tables:

  • the Dashboards template, from Pro, and Motion, on Team and Enterprise;
  • connecting your apps to an artifact, and storing data in one, from Pro;
  • sharing a new artifact at a link, from Pro. Free can still publish a legacy one at a public link.

On every plan they need Cloud code execution and file creation turned on, in Settings, Capabilities (Organization settings on Team and Enterprise). In Claude Code, artifacts are on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.

Claude artifact examples

Anthropic's pages give their own: a journal or a tracker that remembers what you enter, a game whose leaderboard everyone shares, and in Claude Code a walkthrough of a pull request with the diff annotated, a dashboard from data the session pulled, or a timeline that fills in as a task runs.

To open working ones, Solta's template gallery has the kinds of pages people ask Claude for. Each is a single React file, live at its own link, and you can remix one and change it in your own words:

See every template. A site on Solta's Free plan carries a small Made with Solta mark, which leads to how pages like these are made and published.

How to share a Claude artifact

Artifacts start private to you. To share one, open it and press Share, then choose who has access: on Pro and Max, Only you or Anyone with the link, and you can invite people by email (in beta). On Team and Enterprise, they stay inside your organization unless an Owner turns on external sharing.

Who can open it is the part to check. Anthropic's sharing article says everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared artifact, even with the link, and someone you invite by email needs one with that address. The exception is a legacy artifact published from a chat, on Free, Pro or Max: anyone with its link can view and use it without an account, and is asked to sign up only for the parts that use Claude. It can be embedded on other websites you name, and unpublishing it can't be undone. Claude Code's documentation says an artifact it publishes and you share publicly opens with no sign-in.

So before you send one, open the link in a private browser window, where you aren't signed in to Claude. If it opens and works there, Claude's link is all you need.

When to put it on Solta instead

When the person it is for has no Claude account, or you want more say over the link, publish the code itself. Solta serves an HTML file as it is, and compiles a React component when you publish it, with React, Tailwind and the shadcn/ui components it imports. Then:

  • No account to open it. A public or unlisted link opens for anyone who has it, on every plan, and viewers never pay.
  • A password or named people. A password on every plan (Free has 1 password-protected site at a time); Invited, on Pro and Team, opens only for the email addresses you add, each verified once.
  • Versions. A change is a draft until you publish it, and every published version keeps its own address. Free keeps the last 5; Pro and Team keep every one.
  • Comments. On a public or unlisted link, anyone can comment, leaving their email, with no account.
  • Your own domain. On Pro and Team: 1 on Pro, as many as you need on Team. Every site also has its own address on solta.site.
  • An embed. Every site can go on your website with one snippet; on Free it carries a small Solta badge.

The steps are in two guides: hosting what Claude made at its own link, React included, and sending it to a client who has no Claude account. A page that calls Claude while people use it has to call a model through its own address instead, on Pro and Team: how a site calls a model.

Paste your page in the box below

Why a React artifact shows a blank page elsewhere

Code copied out of Claude as a .jsx or .tsx file is a React component, not a page. A browser can't run JSX or its bare imports as they are, and nothing mounts the component, so the file opened on its own shows nothing. The five causes, what the console shows for each, and the fix.

Publish it from the chat

To skip the copying, add Solta to Claude as a connector once. Then ask, in any chat, to publish what Claude made, and the link comes back in the conversation.

In Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it "Solta", URL https://mcp.solta.now/mcp; then sign in to Solta, press Allow, and turn Solta on for this chat.

It works in ChatGPT too. Set up the connector.

Questions

What are Claude's artifacts?

Things Claude makes for you to use or show someone, which open in a window beside the conversation instead of in it: documents, decks, designs, dashboards, single-page websites, diagrams, images and small interactive tools. Claude makes one when what it writes is substantial and self-contained, typically over 15 lines, and likely to be edited or used outside the chat.

Can you use Claude artifacts for free?

Yes. On Claude's Free plan you can make them in a chat and start from the Docs, Slides and Design templates. Sharing a new one at a link, connecting your apps to one and storing data in one start on Pro. On Free you can still publish a legacy one, made in a chat before 16 September 2026, at a public link.

Can Claude see artifacts?

Claude works on the ones in your conversation: ask it to change one and it does, highlight text in a doc and choose Edit with Claude, or press Try fixing with Claude on an error to send it the details. In Claude Code, give Claude the address of one someone shared with you and it reads it.

What are the best artifacts from Claude?

There is no official list. Anthropic's pages name what they are for: documents, decks, designs, dashboards and small tools, and apps that call Claude, such as journals, trackers and games with a shared leaderboard. For working examples to open and copy, Solta's template gallery has proposals, calculators, dashboards, a trip planner and a wedding RSVP.

How do I share a Claude artifact with someone who has no Claude account?

Anthropic's help article says everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared one, except a legacy one published from a chat, which anyone with the link can open. Otherwise, copy the code and publish it where no account is needed: on Solta a public or unlisted link opens for anyone, and a password is on every plan.

Try it with your own file

No account needed. Paste it or drop it, and the link is yours to keep once you claim it.

Or publish it from the chat

Add Solta to Claude or ChatGPT once, then ask in any conversation to publish what it built. The link comes back in the chat.
